FACTS: Poverty & Unemployment
“Unemployment has risen to an unbelievable and unbearable estimated 85 per cent. Unemployment and idleness... have a propensity for social disenchantment. For us, employment is synonymous to peace"–  Ms. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia

The Liberian Diaspora Fund is a social investment fund that provides an innovative approach to leveraging the remittance from the Diaspora to invest in small to medium size businesses in Liberia that would help create jobs and in turn reduce the poverty level.

Other than Firestone, the Liberian government is the single largest employer in the country. The private sector has been largely dormant since the start of the civil war in 1989 and continues to be because most investors still consider the country an environment with high risk.

Owned and managed by Liberians, the fund will allow Liberians living in the Diaspora to invest in specific businesses and sectors. Last year, Liberians send approximately 60 million home. Most Liberians have been sending this form of remittance home since the start of the war.
